HTC brings its new Sense themes to One M8, M7 with Play Store update

If you have an older HTC One you can get a few splashes of the new styling and customization options that launched on the new One M9.

HTC has revamped its Blinkfeed app, renaming it HTC Sense Home. Along with some updates to the Flipboard-style Blinkfeed, you can mix and choose between a variety of new themes.

HTC has an online theme builder if you want to explore what the options are. You can also use this tool to send a theme right to your device.

The launcher also gives you a widget that changes up suggested apps based on your location and recommends new ones to download from the Play Store. In our review we didn’t find it tremendously useful, but it’s there if you think it’s something you want to try.

The impact on you: The HTC Home launcher is worth checking out if you have a previous generation of the One. It’s not quite Sense 7, but it takes Sense 7’s best feature, Themes, and makes it available on older devices. HTC has wisely put itscustom apps in the Play Store, so you don’t have to wait for those slow-to-roll-out Android operating system updates to get new features

HTC One M9 goes on sale tonight, costs $649 unlocked

HTC’s flagship One M9 smartphone will be available in the U.S. from Friday, with an unlocked version selling for US$649.

The smartphone, which was launched to good reviews at the Mobile World Congress earlier this month, will initially be sold through the company’s website. The handset will then be made available through all major U.S. carriers—AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon—on April 10.

The prices for the smartphone sold through the carriers were not provided by HTC, and will be revealed at a later date. The configurations of the phone may also vary depending on the carrier.

HTC is releasing its flagship smartphone amid a management shakeup and growing competition. HTC’s chairwoman Cher Wang took on the role of CEO last week, while former CEO Peter Chou was given a new position within the company to lead the “Future Development Lab.”

Samsung will also start shipping its Galaxy S6 smartphone—which was also unveiled at MWC—very soon. HTC was the world’s 14th largest smartphone vendor in 2014, according to IDC.

The 5-inch HTC One M9 smartphone has been praised for its looks, despite being virtually identical to its predecessor, the One M8. However, some design changes have been noted in reviews, including the moving of the start button from the left to the right side of the phone.

The smartphone, which weighs 157 grams, will come with Google’s Android 5.0.2 OS. HTC claims the smartphone provides 21.7 hours for 3G talk time and around 400 hours for standby time on one battery charge.

The LTE smartphone has a 64-bit Qualcomm eight-core Snapdragon 810 processor, which is considered among the most advanced mobile processors for smartphones. The chip has a graphics processor capable of rendering 4K video.

The handset includes a 20-megapixel rear camera, and a front “UltraPixel” camera, which HTC claims has faster shutter speed and captures more light for more vivid pictures.

Other features include up to 32GB of storage, 3GB of RAM, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.1, and micro-HDMI and micro-USB 2.0 ports. A micro-SD slot can support up to 2TB of expandable storage.

HTC sends invites for the reveal of its next super-sized smartphone, the One M9 Plus

HTC one m9

HTC is jazzing up the One M9 in hopes of making a splash in China.

The company sent out invites for an unveil of its rumored One M9 Plus on April 8. Though since the invitations went to Chinese media, we’re unlikely to see the phone here in the U.S. (Or at least, not for a while.)

However, it’s another telling sign of HTC’s strategy to try and compete more aggressively . Certainly it feels a bigger screen size matters there, though it doesn’t go to the full phablet level like the Galaxy Note 4.

Fortunately, we have a fuller picture of what’s coming. Android Police posted several leaked images that give us a sneak peek at a rather odd-looking device, with a fingerprint reader that looks like a repressed Samsung home button and a bulked-up camera on the back.

According to a leaked screenshot, the M9 Plus sports a 5.2-inch, 1440p LCD screen with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It’s powered by a MediaTek MT6795T processor. Details show a 20MP camera just like the newest One M9, though it also includes a Duo Camera sensor. The One M9 just has a single shooter on the back.

Why this matters: HTC is trying to make this the year it rides a comeback, hoping its new HTC One M9 and fresh leadership from new CEO Cher Wang will turn the tide. It’s a tall order with a lot of hype for the Samsung Galaxy S6 and plenty of other Android phones headed out the door this year

HTC pack powerful BoomSound speakers with the One M9

HTC Ireland has posted a teaser video mentioning that the One M9 smartphone will have a more powerful set of speakers on the front. Known as the BoomSound speakers, these have been the highlight of previous HTC flagships like the One M7 and the One M8. Judging by the teaser posted by the company, it seems like the successor will be even better as far as audio performance is concerned.

It is being said that HTC might use Dolby 5.1 audio technology with the new BoomSound speakers, which should be able to produce exceptional audio. The teaser says “get your hands on bigger boom”, hinting that the speakers might be one of the strong suits of the smartphone.

Since the One M9 is rumored to be packing a 1080p display with the same size as the predecessor, the company will have to make up for the rest of the hardware with new features like these. We can expect to find a Snapdragon 810 chipset on board as well along with a powerful 21MP camera on the back.

We recently caught glimpses of the One M9 from all possible angles, revealing practically everything we need to know about the design of the handset, so there are barely any surprises left. The company will unveil the handset on March 1, which is when the Samsung Galaxy S6 will be revealed as well.

HTC is rumored to be launching a bigger version of the One M9 known as the One M9 Plus, which could possibly have a Quad HD resolution display on board as well. So there’s plenty to look forward to this Sunday as HTC and Samsung unveil their flagship offerings to the world.
